Other Green Projects at Cardiff Schools

Recycling 

• We recycle at major school events, such as the fall Halloween Carnival, the Mardi Gras fundraiser, and the spring Ice Cream Social. You’ll find recycling containers for cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard at all our major events.

• New for 2009/2010! The Wednesday packet is going electronic! This will help us provide a more efficient means of communication and will allow parents to easily search and find information. It also saves paper and $s! There will be a paper option for those who do not have computer access at home.

• To reduce our electricity usage due to lighting, we’ve added lighting sensors in key areas. Lights automatically turn off when a room is not in use. Additionally, we’ve changed to high efficiency ballasts for lights.

Reducing our water consumption

• Reducing water consumption is a focal point of grounds personnel.

Reducing automobile traffic

• Students and parents are encouraged to walk, bike, or scoot to school. We also promote a weekly Walk/Bike to School Day. Look for the flyer and signs, and join your friends and neighbors on a walk or bike to school!

Environmental education

• We have a partnership with the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy. Classrooms participate in projects that help them learn about this important natural resource in our backyard.
• The Ada Harris Green Team students are environmental ambassadors to Cardiff Schools. Click here for more information.
• Roots & Shoots is an after school environmental club. Students participate in activities and field trips that help them learn about the natural environment. Past trips include the landfill, recycling sorting center, water treatment facility, and regular beach cleanups. We are currently looking for a coordinator for 2009/2010.
