| The
Governor has proposed a 10% across the board cut in state funds.
While we applaud the Governor for his efforts to balance the budget,
attacking the education budget is not the way to do it. Education
for our children needs to be a priority for California.
Education in California
is already severely under funded. It is a shameful fact that today,
California rates 45th out of 50 states in terms of per student funding
for education. In addition, recent comprehensive and independent
studies have shown California education desperately needs more funds.
Even though the Cardiff
School District is a ‘basic aid funded’ district and
is somewhat shielded by these cuts, we are looking at a $200k shortage
of funding for next year. This means that if these cuts go ahead,
your child will be affected. The Cardiff School District does not
have extra funds to make up for this shortfall. Therefore, programs
and/or positions will be cut.
In addition, our friends
in other (non-basic aid) school districts who are much more severely
impacted deserve our support. If all School Districts take action
and make a statement, we can get our message across. After all,
having well educated kids in California will affect all our futures
too!
Call to Action
We don’t have to settle for this attack on education. Let
your representatives know that you value education and view it as
essential for the future of California and your children. Time and
time again in many polls, Californians have shown that education
is one of, if not the top priority. It is critical that we remind
our representatives that it remains a priority for California.
Join us in writing a
letter to your representatives. We have provided sample letters
and a template from which you can copy paragraphs to build your
own letter. Even better, write your own personal letter and let
your representatives know that we demand better for our kids. (Please
note, we have been informed that mass duplication of the same letter
is ineffective, they count it as one; individualization is key!)
As leaders of the CEF
and PSO, we strongly urge you to help us make a difference by taking
action now! We cannot raise enough funds to cover this shortage!
If you have questions or would like more information, please do
not hesitate to contact Mark
