    FAQs Answered

    Who Can Join Band?
    Any Student in Grades 4-6

Do I need to have music experience?
No! We will teach you how to read music and play your instrument. All levels of experience are welcome.

What are the instruments in the band?

    Woodwinds: Clarinet, Flute, Alto Saxophone
    Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone
    Percussion

*Please note: Percussion is not drum-set. This is classical/orchestral percussion. Students will expected to play keyboard instruments as well as drums. Piano experience is preferred. Students interested in becoming percussionists will need to attend auditions from 2:45-4:00pm on Thursday Sept. 5. There are limited spaces available.

I don't have an instrument. Where can I get one?

Come to Strike Up the Band Night! You can rent an instrument from San Diego Music Studio or loan one from the school (limited supply).

*If you are interested in purchasing an instrument, please consult Ms.Zapata or a reputable source (i.e. San Diego Music Studio, Bertrand's, etc.) for recommendations first! We will help ensure you find a quality instrument for your child to play and keep you away from "Instrument Shaped Objects."

What supplies do I need for my instrument and where can I get them?

All students will need to purchase an "Essential Elements Book 1" method book for their instrument, as well as a cleaning supply kit for their specific instrument including the following items:

Clarinets & Saxophones: reeds, cork grease, cleaning cloths
    Flutes: cleaning cloths
    Trumpets/Baritones: valve oil
    Trombones: slide grease
Percussion:  one pair of SD 1 sticks, one pair of Vic Firth m134 xylophone mallets

All of these can be purchased at Strike up the Band Night from San Diego Music Studio, or at your local music store.

    When does the band meet?
You will meet twice each week: once before school (7:00-7:45am) with just your section (people who play the same instrument as you), and once after school.

    Are all rehearsals mandatory?
Yes. You need to attend all sectionals and full ensemble rehearsals. If you are going to be absent, please communicate with your coach and Ms.Zapata. If you are absent frequently, you may not be ready to perform with the band.

What do I need to wear for performances?

We will provide you with a WildCat Band T-Shirt. Please wear this for performances with dark blue jeans and closed-toe shoes.

How much will I have to practice?

We ask students to practice every day for 10-20 minutes, or three days a week for 30 minutes.  If you practice less than twice a week you might fall behind the group.  Just apply yourself with some extra practice and try and catch up! Most important, keep coming to your sectional lesson and your band rehearsal.

There are incentives (prizes) for turning in practice logs! For every 10 practice logs (equating to 10 hours of practice), students earn one prize!
