Short Term Independent Study

The Board of Trustees authorizes short-term independent study as an optional alternative instructional strategy for eligible students. Short-term independent study is for students enrolled in a comprehensive elementary school program and is for the purpose of accommodating emergencies or required travel.

Independent study is available to students in grades K-6; pupils with exceptional needs may participate when the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) specifically provides for participation. A student's participation in independent study shall be voluntary. Students participating in independent study shall have the right, at any time, to enter or return to the regular classroom mode of instruction. (Education Code 51747; 5 CCR 11700)

Parents/guardians of students who are interested in independent study shall contact the school office at least five (5) days prior to the start of the contract. The Superintendent or designee shall approve independent study for an individual student only upon determining that the student is prepared to meet the district's requirements for independent study.

The Superintendent’s designee or site principal shall ensure that a written independent study agreement, as prescribed by law, exists for each participating student. (Education Code 51747) The written agreement shall specify the length of time in which each independent study assignment must be completed.

Each student’s short-term independent study option is limited to no less than five (5) and no more than fourteen (14) school days.

Please contact your child’s school office for more details.
