Construction Update - June 2020Construction on the new Cardiff School resumed in April 2020 after a three-month delay due to a lawsuit filed against the District by a few nearby residents. The construction halted by the lawsuit included the classroom buildings and ancillary spaces. Construction on the auditorium building, outdoor assembly steps and playfields is now underway with the District receiving final approval of the boundary adjustment from the National Park Service.
Over the summer (June-August 2020), construction will continue on these elements, along with a safer, more efficient drop-off/pick-up and parking lot area. Modernization of two classrooms attached to the administration building will also occur. A portion of the grass playfields will be available for use by the students.
On the first day of school (August 25, 2020), kindergarteners and first graders will return to campus in the old portables, while second-grade students will remain at Ada Harris during the fall.*
Construction on the new classroom buildings will continue after the first day of school and is expected to be completed in December 2020. At winter break, all kindergarteners and first-grade students will be moved from the portables into their new classrooms and second-grade students will move from Ada Harris into their new Cardiff classrooms.
In January 2021, the old portables will be removed. From January to June 2021, the remainder of the site work, landscaping and hard court play areas will be completed.
In June 2021,* Cardiff School will be finished and ready to welcome generations of new students to the campus.

* Cardiff School District is still evaluating return-to-school guidelines from public health officials in anticipation of making a final determination as to how school will reopen on August 25, 2020, the first day of school.
** A new lawsuit was filed on June 15, 2020 by the same plaintiff’s behind the first lawsuit, which was settled in March 2020. This could further delay the project rendering this timeline obsolete. Please continue to check back on this page for updates.
